The Nasdaq-100 is an index, not a single technology company. It combines the weighted price changes of large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. Rates, earnings, economic growth, risk appetite, and the largest constituent weights can pull the index in different directions. A perpetual adds synthetic financing, oracle, session, collateral, and liquidation mechanics.

Understand the index before trading the ticker

Nasdaq describes the Nasdaq-100 as an index of 100 large domestic and international non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. It uses a rules-based weighting methodology, so it is not an equal vote across 100 stocks. A move in a very large constituent can matter much more than the same percentage move in a smaller member.1

An NDX perpetual provides synthetic exposure to the referenced index. It does not own the component shares, distribute their dividends directly, grant voting rights, or allow participation in a shareholder meeting. Provider rules determine how reference pricing, fees, closures, and liquidations affect the account.179

Why interest rates matter to growth-heavy indexes

An equity price reflects expectations about future cash flows and the return investors require to hold risk. When long-term yields or required returns rise, the present value assigned to distant expected cash flows can fall. Companies valued heavily on future growth can therefore be especially sensitive to a rapid rate repricing.24

The shortcut that higher yields always mean lower NDX is still too simple. Yields can rise because growth expectations improve, which may also support earnings. They can fall because recession risk rises, which may damage earnings. Traders must ask why rates moved and how the earnings outlook changed at the same time.2

Earnings and concentration can override the macro tape

Because constituent weights differ, earnings from the largest members can influence the index even when most stocks move differently. Revenue growth, margins, capital spending, guidance, and management commentary can change both the expected cash-flow path and the valuation multiple investors are willing to pay.1

Worked example: yields fall after a soft inflation report, which initially supports growth stocks. Later that day, a heavily weighted constituent cuts guidance and falls sharply. NDX can finish lower even though the macro input appeared favorable. The index is the weighted result of both forces, not a pure interest-rate instrument.13

Read macro surprises through rates and earnings

CPI, employment data, and Federal Reserve decisions can change expectations for policy, growth, and margins. The published number matters relative to expectations. The market then interprets what it means for yields, the dollar, demand, and company profits.34

A cooler CPI report may lift NDX if yields fall without a major deterioration in expected growth. The same report may fail to help if investors interpret it as evidence of a rapid demand slowdown. Observe Treasury yields, breadth, and the largest constituents after the release rather than trading the headline label alone.32

Historical case: the 2022 rate shock

Nasdaq reported that the Nasdaq-100 ended 2022 with a loss of about 33 percent as inflation, aggressive monetary tightening, and weakness in growth-oriented shares changed the valuation environment. The episode is a useful example of a persistent discount-rate shock rather than a one-session reaction.2

The reusable lesson is not that every hiking cycle produces the same return. In 2022, the speed and scale of repricing, starting valuations, inflation uncertainty, and earnings expectations interacted. A current trade should compare today's starting conditions with that mechanism instead of copying the historical outcome.24

The cash open, close, and overnight gap

The U.S. cash-equity open concentrates overnight information into executable stock prices. The close concentrates index, fund, and benchmark activity. Earnings released after the close can move a constituent before the next regular session, creating a gap between the prior cash close and the next opening auction.1

Extended index-market availability can overlap with closures in the underlying cash market. Liquidity in the reference ecosystem is not identical at every hour. A position held across earnings or a weekend needs a gap-loss estimate, not only a stop level drawn from regular-session candles.85

Worked trade: soft CPI and a failed breakout

Assume traders expect CPI to remain firm. The release is cooler, yields fall, and NDX jumps 1.5 percent. A trader buys the breakout with high leverage. During the next hour, yields recover, market breadth weakens, and the index returns below the pre-release high. The original bullish interpretation has lost confirmation even though CPI itself has not changed.32

The trade plan should say whether invalidation is a yield reversal, a return below the breakout level, deterioration in the largest constituents, or a fixed maximum loss. If liquidation is closer than the normal post-release retracement, the leverage has made account mechanics more important than the thesis.106

Separate index analysis from perpetual mechanics

The reference index describes the underlying market. The perpetual account adds provider fees, oracle updates, leverage limits, collateral, market status, and liquidation. A chart that appears to show NDX does not guarantee that every displayed level was executable through the provider at the same size.789

Before entry, record the cash-session state, key yields, market breadth, the largest relevant earnings events, provider status, intended size, and liquidation distance. After exit, separate index movement from costs and execution so a good macro idea does not conceal a poor implementation.1810

A repeatable Nasdaq-100 dashboard

Track long-term Treasury yields, the next CPI and Federal Reserve events, earnings from major constituents, index breadth, volatility around the cash open and close, and the provider's current session status. Use the index methodology to understand concentration instead of relying on the label technology index.1348

Write two alternative scenarios before trading. One should explain how the position wins; the other should explain how the same news could produce the opposite response. This forces the plan to account for expectations, positioning, and competing drivers rather than turning a macro slogan into a leveraged bet.62
